Christmas blessings…Russ-Stick Style

To me, Christmas time is also a time to reflect on the blessings you have experienced through the year.

Even more so than Thanksgiving.

We have many blessings. Health, family, friends, and animals.

Animals that gravitate to our farm and kennel.

Comanchero was one of those creatures heading our way.

However, after a summer providing horse back rides at his original stable, he had made a place in the herd and we hated to move him again.

Comanchero will remain at Hobby Horse Riding Stable with the other Mustangs.

One road over.

And we will remain a 3-horse farm.

Our trio.

Our trilogy of beauty, brains and brawn.

Tomorrow we are getting two new heifers. Dexter and a Dexter cross.

One is 16-months old, the other is 12-months old.

It will be nice to grow our herd.

It seems like just yesterday our little Luna was born.

A new spring baby is planned for 2010, compliments of Dixie and Dudley.

Shiloh, our latest addition, has settled right in.

He gives a new meaning to the phrase, Tree Hugger.

Shiloh took Union’s spot in the kennel, so she is now a full-time house dog.

We attempted a retirement last year with Union, however she made it clear she preferred the dog yard.

This year, she’s opting for the radiant cherry wood heat of the woodstove.

Of course, when we run teams, she now dons a dog jacket and joins in as a leader.

Our new little boar we ordered isn’t coming until late April. We would need to pick him up in late December, so we went to Plan B.

We will be getting a full grown boar over the holiday break and picking up our new little one once the snow goes, from a future litter.

We enjoy the ebb and flow of farm life.

We hope you enjoy our stories throughout the year.

And may all your trails be blessed.

Merry Christmas folks ~

Summer on the Ranch

It’s good to have friends who share your dream, such as AC (Animal Control) Ellen.

In visiting her ranch, it confirmed to our grandboys that we (Nana and Papa) weren’t the only ones who liked to farm.

AJ got to experience the joy of holding a 3-day old kid.

Kaleb got to experience a mother’s concern.

And, once passing the test, to hold that mother’s precious little one.

Yes, we, like AC Ellen, like our animals. Big, small, and many.

And we love our amazing Mustangs, just as AC Ellen does.

AC Ellen has the happiest (and cleanest) pigs around.

And we will benefit by the birth of this trio. One of them, Rachel, is coming to live with us once weaned.

The boys realized that we, like AC Ellen, love what we do.

Summer, fall, winter, spring.

Until tomorrow ~ the Grandboys have gone back home ~ God willing,

Russ-Stick Acres Aerobic Regime

Who would think…

…these little darlin’s could have such power.

For the last week, each evening, Rustic Russ and I have literally “hog-tied” little Rosie to give her a daily injection.

Easier said than done.

Dogs are easy. Cows can be easy. Horses no problem.

Even our former 800# sow, Peppermint Patty, was easy.

But wrangling a 30# pig is an aerobic event for two grown adults.

Rosie dashed, squealed, barked, snorted, and sighed. Only to do it all again the next day.

Whimsical Weekend

I love weekends.

I feel free.

And I don’t take freedom lightly.

I get to watch my hubby play cowboy.

He does on a daily basis, but I’m usually not home to see him in action.

I get to see who’s moved into the neighborhood.

And watch the cows get excited about new grass.

And new pens.

Really, really excited.

And see our friend, Francie, make nice with the piggies.

And put up new housing.

More pig play with Zip.

And getting the garden area prepared for the fruits of our labor.

Getting the “black gold” all mixed in for next week’s Frolic ~ planting the garden.

Join us, won’t you?

Remember, you can also plant your own slice of Heaven, along side our goods.

First come/first serve, as our garden space is limited.

Until tomorrow ~ honoring our fallen heroes, may God rest their soul

Hogz and Dogz Piggery…is back in business

God gently nudges me awake each morning.

Early.

He wants me to see what he has created.

I smile.

“This is the day which the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24

Today I have even more to smile about.

It’s my hubby’s birthday.

And, we are getting piglets.

We picked up three little grub muffins from a local farm, over by AC Ellen’s place.

Of course we had to stop at Ellen’s on the way home, since we were in the neighborhood.

We caught her doing farm chores and ready for a coffee break and farm talk.

She took a peek at our six-week old gilts riding in the back of the truck.

These gals were caked with dirt and mud.

Lucy.

Ethel

And…

Rosie.

Yes, Hogz and Dogz Piggery is up and running again.

After seeing Lucy and Ethel, we both came to the conclusion, right on the spot, that we miss raising our own little squeeky clean piggies.

So Rustic Russ got his wallet back out and we purchased Rosie as a third, to raise as a future Mama.

We will start anew with Rosie being our “gilt-turned-sow” come winter.

A suitable boar will be located when the time comes.

Welcome home Rosie.

And Lucy (aka “bulk sausage”) and Ethel (aka “sausage link”).

Until tomorrow ~ back in the pig business ~ God willing,

Parallel Friends

Filed under: Farm and Mushing — Tags: , — Administrator @ 10:42 am

Rustic Russ and I love it when people “get it”.

When they understand why we live the way we do.

Why we would rather spend money on our horse’s hooves, than go to a fancy restaurant.

It’s what we do.

It’s how we roll.

And if you are reading this, I bet you “get it” too.

You understand what it feels like to step into nature, have it grasp your heart, your throat, and punch you with a feeling so strong, of raw emotion, it makes you sit down on the nearest stump.

Our friend, AC (Animal Control) Ellen is one of our Parallel Friends.

This past weekend, AC Ellen picked up her new pigs.

This is not a new endeavor. AC Ellen raises her own pork.

She opted for the 80# models this year, whereas, Rustic Russ and I will be getting the little buggars who are just weaned from Mama.

As the story goes, AC Ellen hauled them home, unloaded the trailer and got them secure in their nice new surroundings.

Then…the fun began.

You see, AC Ellen’s new Mustang had never seen pigs before.

Never heard pigs before.

The horses started dancing.

The pigs started dancing.

And they weren’t dancing together.

One of the pigs decided to make a run for it, bolting out of his enclosure, right through the horse pasture.

Chaos ensued.

AC Ellen, being the non-panicky type, stepped into the barn for a scoop of oats to coax the pig back to his enclosure.

Upon coming back out of the barn, two seconds later, the new pig was gone.

Disappeared.

The search was on.

Hours passed.

Early evening turned into night.

A night void of hope for finding the pig.

As AC Ellen was getting ready to turn off her light and call it a day, she said a silent prayer for the pig, who was out among the coyotes.

She wondered how this pig was going to find his way back.

Back to a place he inhabited for less than a minute before bolting out of sight.

Then, the dogs in the dog yard went off.

If you are a musher, you know the different sounds of the dog yard.

This particular canine cacophony prompted AC Ellen to run outside in her P.J.’s, grabbing the headlamp off the hook by the door as she ran.

As she scanned the dog yard, she saw it.

It was the pig. He had returned.

He was frozen, standing in the middle of the dog yard.

There was only one thing AC Ellen could do.

Get out the lasso. The lariat. The essential tool of a Cowgirl.

It was nearing midnight when tiny AC Ellen began swinging the lasso with one hand, as the other hand was still out of commission from a surgery a week prior. A surgery she opted to have sans anesthetic, by the way.

Even one-handed, she still manages to snag the pig.

Every dog in the county reacted to the sound.

Squealing pig, dogs barking.

AC Ellen said he was like a salmon on the line. She reeled him in a foot at a time. One handed.

Yes, we love our Parallel Friends.

The ones who “get it”.

The ones who dash outside in the middle of the night in their pajamas, doning a headlamp, to lasso a pig with one hand tied behind their back.

Until tomorrow ~ God willing, and God bless our Parallel Friends,

Spring Ritual

Yes, spring is here.

Our two piglets are on order.

Two more weeks to go, then we pick up the 6-week old little bundles of squealing joy.

Am I excited?

You betcha.

We enjoy raising pigs.

No CAFO’s here.

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.

Bring back the family farm, folks.

If you’re new to the way most of America farms, click HERE to see what I’m talking about. Take a moment, watch the video.

If you would like a comparison, and missed this original story, CLICK HERE for Weeble’s the Piglet (Part 1).

It’s a testament of how a family farm, us, Russ-Stick Acres, farms their pigs.

You decide…CAFO or Family Farm?

Until tomorrow ~ Part 2 of Weebles coming your way ~ God willing,
