Christmas blessings…Russ-Stick Style

To me, Christmas time is also a time to reflect on the blessings you have experienced through the year.

Even more so than Thanksgiving.

We have many blessings. Health, family, friends, and animals.

Animals that gravitate to our farm and kennel.

Comanchero was one of those creatures heading our way.

However, after a summer providing horse back rides at his original stable, he had made a place in the herd and we hated to move him again.

Comanchero will remain at Hobby Horse Riding Stable with the other Mustangs.

One road over.

And we will remain a 3-horse farm.

Our trio.

Our trilogy of beauty, brains and brawn.

Tomorrow we are getting two new heifers. Dexter and a Dexter cross.

One is 16-months old, the other is 12-months old.

It will be nice to grow our herd.

It seems like just yesterday our little Luna was born.

A new spring baby is planned for 2010, compliments of Dixie and Dudley.

Shiloh, our latest addition, has settled right in.

DSC_0074 (Small)

He gives a new meaning to the phrase, Tree Hugger.

Shiloh took Union’s spot in the kennel, so she is now a full-time house dog.

We attempted a retirement last year with Union, however she made it clear she preferred the dog yard.

This year, she’s opting for the radiant cherry wood heat of the woodstove.

Of course, when we run teams, she now dons a dog jacket and joins in as a leader.

Our new little boar we ordered isn’t coming until late April. We would need to pick him up in late December, so we went to Plan B.

We will be getting a full grown boar over the holiday break and picking up our new little one once the snow goes, from a future litter.

We enjoy the ebb and flow of farm life.

We hope you enjoy our stories throughout the year.

And may all your trails be blessed.

Merry Christmas folks ~

Hands on Farming

DSC_0140 (Small)

Being gone five days a week hurts.

DSC_0142 (Small)

I guess I should have known.

When my sons were babies, I couldn’t leave them either.

Praise God I had the courage to swim against the current and stay home to raise them, when they needed me most.

DSC_0004 (Small)

Sometimes, I catch Rustic Russ without him knowing it, and capture the bliss that comes with connecting with animals.

DSC_0005 (Small)

Farming with animals is so “hands on”.

You must have a desire to connect and know your animals.

DSC_0006 (Small)

No one knows your animals better than you.

No one.

DSC_0007 (Small)

I will be patient, and wait for the day I can be “hands on” with our animals.

Daily.

All day.

DSC_0009 (Small)

Until then, I’m blessed to hear the little nuances each animal created in my absence.

And know they are fortunate to have a shepherd such as Rustic Russ looking over them each day.

Every day.

Until tomorrow ~ God willing,

Tween Time

I’m tired of the fast pace of summer, brought on by countless daylight hours.

I’m looking forward to the time “in between” fall and winter.

Where things slow down, and our interests shift.

We are wrapping up horse training, long lazy Sunday trail rides, and getting wood split and ready for our insatiable wood stoves.

Fall training beckons…

I can’t wait to enter into that world once again.

The world of sled dogs.

Fall training with 16 anxious furry friends.

Autumn Beauty

It won’t be long…

Soon we will be seeing the beauty of autumn unfold around us.

Our local ski resorts will be preparing for the winter season.

Our horses will be filled with a spirit from their ancestors.

Our equine trail time will wind down.

And our protégés will have the winter to ponder next summer’s adventures.

It will be a time for slow, easy walks down our Berry Beary Blvd., drinking in the sights and scents of fall.

Our woodland cabins will signal warmth as wood smoke curls from above.

And our sled dogs will rest on the trails, knowing an exciting winter awaits them.

And our aged dog, Satch, will begin her 18th year, enjoying her days at Russ-Stick Acres.

Her doggy Heaven on earth.

Equine Eyes

I love watching our horses.

They are so…in the moment.

Always vigilant about their surroundings.

Even if it’s just to check out the new “kid” on the block.

Rustic Russ’ Runaway Raz Ride

The day started out like any other Sunday.

I watched, as Rustic Russ packed his horse, Raz, for the ride across town, crossing the highway, past a small lake, and into the hills and beyond.

Treats for himself.

Treats for Raz.

Raz has come to know the old cast-off light blue Bugler can that holds his tasty nuggets each week, snuggled in the leather saddle bag.

As usual, they get escorted out the drive by the two left behind.

Soon, it will be three left behind as Chero comes to stay with us for good, once his summer stint is done at the Troyer’s riding stable.

But wait!!

What’s this??

A very scary, horse eating plant!

Who put that there?

If you know about horses, you know anything “new” like this may cause concern.

It could be a mailbox, a balloon, a wild turkey, a new pile of wood.

Spook training is essential when the horse is being trained.

Rustic Russ trained Raz.

Opening umbrellas, tarps in a heap, pop cans crinkling, flags fluttering, the list is endless.

And you would think they would get the hang of it after a while.

But not today. Not this 1/2 Mustang.

Don’t let his size fool you. He’s big. He’s tough.

But dog-gone it, that plant is certainly out to kill him!

Rustic Russ held on for a fast, thundering gallop down the drive.

There’s a lot of horse power under that saddle when a horse bolts and gallops.

Powerful enough to suck your favorite hat right off your head!

Amazingly, once they leave the property, Raz sails along with loose dogs, children running out to greet them, mailboxes, and the limited traffic our sleepy town produces.

And why wouldn’t he. He’s got Rustic Russ reassuring him all along the way.

Summer on the Ranch

It’s good to have friends who share your dream, such as AC (Animal Control) Ellen.

In visiting her ranch, it confirmed to our grandboys that we (Nana and Papa) weren’t the only ones who liked to farm.

AJ got to experience the joy of holding a 3-day old kid.

Kaleb got to experience a mother’s concern.

And, once passing the test, to hold that mother’s precious little one.

Yes, we, like AC Ellen, like our animals. Big, small, and many.

And we love our amazing Mustangs, just as AC Ellen does.

AC Ellen has the happiest (and cleanest) pigs around.

And we will benefit by the birth of this trio. One of them, Rachel, is coming to live with us once weaned.

The boys realized that we, like AC Ellen, love what we do.

Summer, fall, winter, spring.

Ease on down…

Ease on down…the road.

Come on, ease on down, ease on down…the road.

Don’t you carry nothing, that might be a load.

Come on, ease on down, ease on down…

the Road.

Mustang Mania

Year ’round, like clockwork, our farrier, Bruce, comes to trim the three horses.

It’s a set date.

Every six weeks.

Carved in stone.

And Nauish (pronounced Now-eesh) knows it.

And Bruce knows it.

And Rustic Russ knows it.

Nauish and I have the same mind set when it comes to pedicures.

No way, no how, nothin’ doin’.

Bruce has some convincing to do.

Sweet talk helps.

Then again, prayer works wonders.

Amazing. My sweet boy succumbs every time.

Motherly Love

Even teeny tiny babies…

Grow up to be big strappin’ boys.

Who make their mother proud.

Hat’s off to Deb, and the mother of Raz ~ Baby Girl.

For creating one of the most amazing horses we could ever own.

Deb’s selfless giving during the first days of Raz being on earth, made the difference. The handling, the patience, the guidance.

And thank you, Deb, for the picture of our big boy, as he was just starting out, by his mother’s side.

Until tomorrow ~ Happy Mother’s Day to all ~ God willing,

Woodswoman
