Cowboy Kaleb

I’ve always enjoyed having boys around.

Most boys are direct, enjoy a challenge, and skip the drama.

I enjoyed raising my two.

And now I am enjoying the blended family of Rustic Russ.

I love seeing their delight in the things I treasure.

Seeing a new world open up before their very eyes.

Watch them test their fears, while at the same time relishing in the excitement it brings.

Kaleb with a K, from below the 45th Parallel, is one such boy.

Russ-Stick Acres is a whole new world. One of early morning chores, late night dinners, and lots of farm work in between.

No phone, no TV, no video games.

No distractions from raw, pure nature.

Oh, how will they survive?

Stay tuned for more adventures of these nature lovin’ boys at RSA.

Ease on down…the road.

Come on, ease on down, ease on down…the road.

Don’t you carry nothing, that might be a load.

Come on, ease on down, ease on down…

Amish Adventure Awaits

The day has arrived. I’m heading down to get our lambs.

And a pair for AC Ellen.

I will be coming home with five in the early evening. Three for us.

Three that will require names. My favorite part ~ naming new babies.

I have loved dealing with the Amish over the years.

No cell phones.

No computers.

Just pen to paper.

I did get a call one year from an Amish family ~ the Hershbergers. They asked their driver to contact me and invite me to a barn raising. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get away from my all-important place of employment, where I still work today.

That is a mistake I will not make again, should the opportunity present itself.

Miss Sultry Summer has arrived at Russ-Stick Acres.

Hot days, and cooler nights.

Thank the Lord for the cooler nights.

Already my mind is focused on cool October training days…

But that will have to wait its turn.

Pigs are growin’, lambs are on the way, and Rustic Russ and I saw 3 new little bunnies in the barn today.

Black with white dots on the top of their heads.

Tiny little ones that would fit in the palm of your hand.

That, makes our hearts sing. We love our free-ranging rabbits.

Stay tuned for lots of Amish pics as I head down to the land of Blueberry Jam and homemade bread.

Until tomorrow ~ Amish bound and lovin’ it ~ God willing,

It’s Raining Cat…erpillars!

Malacosoma Americanum.

Pretty fancy name for a pesky visitor.

The Eastern Tent Caterpillar.

To us, they are like company.

Company with boundry issues.

I love the saying “Don’t confuse hospitality with endurance.”

These little guys, well…

they test our endurance.

But then so do other unwanted guests, such as skunks and porkies.

We have those too.

Malacosoma Americanum arrive and unpack their bags.

And hitch a ride on my camera bag.

And they make themselves at home.

On top of our heads.

Riding on dog’s backs, horse’s backs, our backs.

The clothesline.

Our fencing, where they bob their head in a decision-making process before walking the tight rope.

They sound like rain on the metal roof of our cabin, as they fall from the trees.

They litter our walkways.

They join me in the outhouse. On the door, in the door, on the ceiling. I can honestly say, never on the seat itself.

While eating outdoors, which we do most nights, we casually pick them from our pant legs during conversation.

No big deal.

They don’t bite.

They don’t sting.

Although they eat the leaves, they don’t kill the trees, except for trees already compromised.

So, what’s the fuss?

Sure, you have to look at your chainsaw handle before you grab it.

And your picnic table is preoccupied.

And yes, one was resting on my pillow one night.

But they are only visitors for a short time.

We can endure.

They come in late May, and by late June they have begun their cycle.

The cycle of life.

Folks are pretty worked up.

Kill them, you say?

Have the government drop the pesticide from the sky?

Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT).

That is the answer?

It will only work on this year’s crop and not prevent next years from hatching.

What about the Monarch Butterfly that might also be affected?

Or, even scarier, the latest mystery of what is causing Colony Collapse Disorder (yes, another acronym) in our bee population?

As we know, bees make the world go ’round.

So drop the pesticide from the air. Make our lives comfortable ~ not messy. Forget about the “green” ways and buying only organic.

Really?

Try viewing it as a thing of beauty.

Their cocoon, which they build in hours, is a thing of beauty.

They work so hard.

And it saddens me when they make poor choices in where they set up shop and where they will emerge.

The other night we were in the cabin. I was fixing dinner when a small moth flew gently by my face. I reached out and it rested on my hand.

Rustic Russ and I both smiled, wondering if it was one of the caterpillars we gently lifted from our pant legs and deposited on the ground while eating dinner under the night’s sky.

Don’t let these harmless, fuzzy, colorful soon-to-be moths keep you inside.

Step out, watching your step as always, and enjoy God’s creatures.

All of them.

The End of the Road?

It’s been a scary ride folks.

Last Tuesday my computer stopped working.

I’ve been struggling and putzing along, trying to keep a semblance of order.

I called the PC Doctor, my new friend John. We found out the Alltel towers were the culprit and once the local Internet provider comes back up to full speed, my computer will be faster/cleaner/and dog-gone more efficient all around.

During this trying time, I questioned my routine.

Should I write less?

Should I go back to how Russ-Stick Acres was last year at this time, which was computer-less? Afterall, we never imagined having a computer at RSA. We had gone 7 years without one, until our first big Event made it a necessity.

The answer is no. Bottom line, I love what I do.

I love the fact that you, daily or as often as possible, take the time to click on our Blog and take a peek into our lives. My life is fuller because of YOU.

So, a simple thank you to you folks for being patient.

We aren’t going anywhere, and when we come back, we’ll be bigger, better, faster.

At least on the computer, because here at Russ-Stick Acres, we’ll continue to take things slow.

Until tomorrow ~ God willing,

Russ-Stick Acres Aerobic Regime

Who would think…

…these little darlin’s could have such power.

For the last week, each evening, Rustic Russ and I have literally “hog-tied” little Rosie to give her a daily injection.

Easier said than done.

Dogs are easy. Cows can be easy. Horses no problem.

Even our former 800# sow, Peppermint Patty, was easy.

But wrangling a 30# pig is an aerobic event for two grown adults.

Rosie dashed, squealed, barked, snorted, and sighed. Only to do it all again the next day.

Patience = Purist

“To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty, and in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before and which shall never be seen again.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

OK, I don’t get it.

Perhaps I never will.

Society has made it too easy.

Too many choices.

Take the quick and easy fix.

Nope. Not this Gal.

I’ll go down fighting. A purist at heart.

A purist: Is one who desires that an item remain true to its essence and free from adulterating or diluting influences. Wikipedia

As with photography, my passion.

I’m talking front-end photography. Not something that is created once the photo is shot.

Don’t like the picture you snapped? Use one of the many tools on the market to alter it.

Don’t like the sky color? Press a button and give it a tweak.

Don’t like the legs on that person? Swap them for another set.

Who knows what to believe anymore?

What is real?

Are there any purists out there?

The answer is yes.

Jim Brandenburg and his “Chased by the Light” project.

Jim took 90 days and took ONE PICTURE A DAY.

Snapped the shot once.

Imagine.

Only one picture. One time. Each day.

He made it count.

He had patience.

Follow along ~ and take a moment to see the beauty he saw…behind the camera lens.

Be a purist.

Why not try to just use what imagery is out there?

God given.

Follow along. Let me show you.

I’ll just shoot.

Until…

I get it right.

(For more information on Jim Brandenburg from Minnesota, see his Blog)

Until tomorrow ~ proud to be a purist ~ God willing,

White Pine Wonder

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 11:17 am

Pinus strobus ~ Michigan’s state tree.

But it’s so much more than all that.

Each bundle on the white pine has 5 needles.

It makes it easy to remember ~ five letters in “white” ~ five needles.

1-2-3-4-5.

Count ‘em.

Never 3.

Never 4.

Think about it.

Always five needles.

For me, the white pine symbolizes His perfection.

Until tomorrow ~ God willing,

Woodswoman
